Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a session last for?
A typical session will last for one hour. In this hour we can cover any aspect of kickboxing you would like to focus on. This could be particular techniques, elements of strength and fitness, developing the style which is right for you, pad work, bag work, sparring drills or sparring itself. In every session you will have a warm up, stretching and then technical focus.
Can I train with a friend?
You are most welcome to train with a friend in a group of two. A discount is available for this and the usual cost of £25 per person for non club members will drop to only £15 per person instead.
What if I have no experience and have never done this before?
This is perfect in all honesty. You are a blank canvas and so we can build everything from the ground up together. Every person who is experienced in any activity was once a beginner. Everyone has to start somewhere, the same is true for you.
Do I need my own equipment?
Initially you will not need any equipment as there is equipment available to use at the dojo. This equipment is sanitized before and after sessions to comply with our ECSP plan (Exit Covid Strategy Policy). Like any sport however, should you enjoy your training and wish to continue, then you should look to purchase your own equipment in the future.
Will Kickboxing help me to lose weight?
Absolutely, kickboxing like many other martial arts is an incredible full body workout. It makes use of every energy system and it builds functional strength at the same time as increasing your flexibility and range of movement, your stamina and endurance, your speed and reactions, your recovery time and your overall levels of performance. This is a guarantee.
Do I have to spar in these sessions?
No not at all. The sessions must be right for you. If you do not want to spar and you would like to focus on pad work, bag work and fitness then that is more than fine.
However, if you are training with the intention of learning kickboxing as a practical self defence art, you must understand that without sparring this will be difficult to accomplish. Only sparring can provide you with the knowledge of range, timing and the resilience to understand the techniques and their use in this way which gives them practicality.
Do I have to follow the grading syllabus?
No one has to grade if they do not want to. There is no pressure or expectation as regards grading. All of my students will learn the techniques from our nationally recognised grading syllabus as it is the structure of our art and training program. This is the art we are practicing but it does not mean you have to grade if you do not want to.
What if I would like to follow the grading syllabus and work towards my black belt?
This is something I will wholeheartedly support you with. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a beginner go from a white belt to a higher grade. It is a wonderful thing to watch my students abilities grow and to be a part of that journey as they transform themselves into the martial artist they want to be.
Our kickboxing syllabus is nationally recognised, insured and approved by our NGB the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association.
Do I have to buy a uniform to train in kickboxing?
No not at all. Wear whatever gym gear you are comfortable training in. The quality of training is what is important to me not what brand you are wearing when you do it.
How long does it take to earn a black belt in kickboxing?
On average it can take between 5-10 years to attain a black belt in kickboxing. Achieving a black belt is an incredible goal and it is not one that just anyone can achieve otherwise everyone would have one. However the growth you experience as an individual in every way whilst making your journey to becoming one is more important than the belt itself. Once you have earned yours it is with you for life as a milestone and it is most definitely an accomplishment to be proud of.
